Guys, those of you with first-hand experience, can you enlighten me as to whether the EI for CBs is a stunning improvement and in which particular area(s) please? I'm considering upgrading before the new batch all sell out. I don't have any problem with my OE system and I have spare condensers & points. My '64 starts, from cold or hot, and whips up to 80mph without any problem at all -- although I wouldn't keep it there for long, at least not until I've fitted an oil cooler!

Informed opinions would be gratefully read.

Hi Steve,

I first have to admit that I don't use the electronic ignition sold from this site but a reworked E- ignition from another motorcycle. I don't think the e-ignition from this site is not good, I just don't like the use of the mechanical advancer and use of the cameshaft as a good timing reference.

But improvements are a higher secundaire voltage, stable timing and no point adjustments anymore. This is resulting in better ignition of lean mixtures and better iddling and higher reving (also depending on valve springs) and more time to ride it.

I can understand why you want an oilcooler in spain. a couple of years ago I traveled to spain (from the netherlands) on my CB72 and the more I drove to the south, especialy in the mounains, the oil tempratures went higher and higher, even above 140 degrees.

I use 10W50 (castrol full synthetic) with paper oil filter and an extra 0.6 littre oil (beceuse of the oil filter conversion), but I still had to pull over a few times, as a precaution.

Thanks for the reply, Jensen. I eventually invested in a xenon timing light last week and discovered that my CB's advancer mech is pretty healthy; full advance is within the prescribed limit. That makes me happy!

My old girl gets spoiled, when it comes to my lavishing gifts; but I'm finding it hard to justify spending what is, after all, quite a bit of cash on a system, the current version of which works perfectly.

Jensen, so I am picturing, crank triggered, CDI. I found a utube video, where a guy did it on a cb350. It was cool, he was showing kick starting it, and the the thing was sitting there ideling, he was showing the wires from the point plate, were unhooked to prove that he had it.

Steve, I have installed 2 of the e-ignitions, one on a CL, and one on a CB. They are definately an improvement over stock, smoother idle, smoother running, and no adjustment of points. That said, I don't use them on my bikes, as I really don't mind doing an occasional adjustment or two, and my bikes strat and run beautifully when tuned with Eds' recipie.

Hi,

I'm not saying that IE is better than the original points, or that you should buy IE, the question was what it did extra above points, and I answered. My dream has the original points ignition, so my 1962 CB72 has them, nothing wrong here, and I'm not planning to change it or replace it with IE. I also have a original CB400F with points, no IE here either, and that's fine.

My 1967 CB72 is more like a engineering project to me, to see how far I can go to modernize it, and made a lot of changes to the original. Therefor I use a spare engine, the original engine is not bolted on but sitting in my garage.

What I did so far :

- added a paper oil filter instead of a centrifugal filter (experimental stage)
- CDI Ignition (from a kawasaki KR1-s 2-stroke)
- pick-up at the crank (best reference)
- early camshafts and mufflers (highest output but a small powerband)
- flat sides carbs from a kawasaki KR1-s
- very light pistons (10,2 :1 compression ratio)
- flowed head and ferroseal coated cilinders
- added oil cooler with temperature controlled flow
- an extra electrical oil pump for lubrification of the cams (experimental stage).

The list of what I like to do is even longer.

Yup, Davo. I'm in the same street as you on that one, right now. I have spare points & condenser, I don't mind tinkering with settings on a regular basis and my CB's idle is rock-solid steady. If I had trouble with idle / acceleration / setup, then I'd upgrade. I'm not interested in higher revs to stress the motor to the limits that I once did (at 16), and I'm now satisfied that my advancer mech is good to go, for now.

All input gratefully filtered.

Jensen, you're an inspiration to us all, I'd say. What a project; you must me more OCD than I am!
