removing clutch plates
I've removed all but 2 friction discs and 2 clutch plates because they are held in by wires that run around the basket! Early models had them, later models didn't, so I hear. Can I do away with them and just re-assemble minus the wires? Motor #CB77E 314577 Thanks a lot, kevin

Re: removing clutch plates
As per the wires.
Use them.
The early/first issue clutch didn't have wires. 1958/1960????????????
I believe the 1961/2 was the first to have wires. (2)
Then a (3) wire issue came along and I think it had (6) friction disc.
Then back to (2) wires and (5) friction disc.
But as this was changing so were the steel disc.
Actually from start tp end of clutch changes there were (6) center hub designs.
There were (3) outer hub designs.
There were (2) pressure plate designs.
A couple of spring changes.
The 1966/67 "Cush Drive" was the best clutch HONDA made.
The best friction disc are the "aluminum core" issue with the wide Black Friction material.
The springs of the "FD" design are the best also.
The best clutch will have a thick first steel, "FD" then a steel with the cut outs in the middle followed with more "FD" and steel.
Hope this makes some sense.
I just purchased a "CD" on eBay and it had all the good parts replaced with the early parts and of course those disc and springs went into the trash. ...........lm
