Dream speedometer (again)

I did some searches but can't find the answer. I bought a speedometer for my 66 Ca77 off of ebay. I hooked up a drill to my (new) cable and the speedo worked fine running the drill counter clockwise. I lifted the front wheel off the ground and spun the wheel forward and the little gear doohickey on the hud spun clockwise. I don't want to hook it up and break something so here I am asking another basic question. Are there two different speedos for different years? Help please.

There are 2 different speedometers, early and a late version. The only difference is the early one doesn't have a high beam indicator light. Other than that they are the same.

Thanks for the reply. I just broke my new $78 cable bench testing it (yes I am a fool!) and just ordered another one. So I guess it will be another week before I get a speedo working....I hope.

FYI, Ron, you wouldn't damage a speedo (or tacho) buy spinning the shaft in the wrong direction.

The speedo is o.k. Steve. I broke the cable when I tried to spin it with a drill. I think the speedo on the bike is frozen (maybe). The one I have on the bench seems to work.

Just an update

The speedo I bought on ebay was frozen. Lesson learned: Try turning cable by hand and NOT with a power drill. I bought another cable off of ebay (another $76) and another used speedo. This one allowed the cable to turn (by hand this time) :) Expensive lesson: $360 total for two cables and two speedometers. The new (old) speedo has milage within 1000 of the original one so I guess it worked out. Next step is to try and grind my new baffles down enough to fit in the pipes.

I have opened up a few OLD frozen Vespa speedos... they can usually be loosened up with a little coaxing and strategically applied amounts of silicon lube. Have you tried to free it up at all?
