Your top case is the same as the C/CA/CL72/77 case and were ya to build as many engines as HONDA did would ya actually make more than one design which fits all?

Got that. And I guessed it was economics that dictated the decision the leave the boss there. But (there's always a 'but'!) they had to stamp different engine numbers; and they had to have the valley cover fabricated to fit over the boss, so why not remo........ Oh, never mind. I'm just being debative!

I wonder if HONDA realised, all those years ago, that The Hole would create such an intense discussion?! I'll bet it was a cruel joke: "I know what we can do to those funny-looking Westerners.......take their money and then give them something to really argue over! Let's build in a Mystery Hole......"

Well, I just realized I have polished the spokes in the wrong order so I'll have to do them all over again! But, back to the matter at hand...

I was indeed mistaken in suggesting there was a tube coming out the front hole--it is actually the plastic cover on the connector for the neutral switch wire. However, I remain unconvinced that there is no tube coming down through the mystery hole. I've attached the two photos from the Shop Manual and two similar photos from my engine (1965 cb77) for the sake of comparison.

I know it's just a hole, but not knowing what it's for has made it a mystery hole and because I have almost no experience with motorcycles, I'm trying to be careful not to put things where they don't belong and to replace whatever might be missing. It's a little bit of insurance against undesirable outcomes for me when I'm riding it and also for the person (maybe my granddaughter) who will inherit it. Hence my persistence.

I certainly do appreciate your interest and patience. I have had this machine for almost 11 months now, and were it not for all the contributions on this site, I would really be at a disadvantage.

Hmmmm, something through The Hole! I wouldn't mind betting that Fig 12 depicts a C/CA motor. As I previously posted: the valley cover on the CB precludes that angle of entry. What lovely, clean inner casings you have, BTW!

I wonder how long we can stretch this one out.........

Steve, the photos do come from the section in the manual dealing with the Disassembly and Assembly of C72-77 engines. I agree with you about the valley cover and with lm about nothing on the Super Hawk going down that hole. And that's the way it's gonna stay.

By the way, I see if I click on the photos from the manual, most of the moire disappears and the details are much more visible.

Yes, the casing is pretty clean...I've ridden this machine less than 4 miles since putting it all together, so it better be!

I've debated posting this for the last hour wondering whether I should tie my shoe-laces together again and knot my shorts as well, just for good measure (camera batteries are dead, so no photos), but ultimately it was the search for knowledge that prevailed.

I happened to see this photo while scrolling the Honda Shop Manual toward the section on starter motors and since I re-opened a can of worms earlier in this thread I feel obliged to watch whither they slither.

I've mistaken wires for tubes earlier, but I'm pretty sure CB72/77 carbs didn't have wires coming from the brass nipples of the float bowls--those just have to be fuel overflow tubes!

I doubt that you'll need the plungers unless yours are completely shot.

the hole everyone speaks of is where instauled my emergentcy pull cord incase the battrey is dead and kicker breaks off, no mystery.
