Hawk+Scrambler=?

Post by FJRrider » Sun Nov 29, 2009 8:42 pm

I've had what I thought was a Dream with Scrambler pipes for about 35 years now just sitting with the rest of my junk. On closer inspection the frame is CB77 10588 so it's a Super Hawk, however it appears someone turned it into a semi-chopper as the forks are raked out a bit. Check out the awesome 1970's floral pattern covering the rake gusset job under the sweet fiberglass desert tank. I also have a CL72-65-60385 frame and motor and a 3rd CL72 motor with a cut up frame. On both the Scrambler motors the identification is on the left side on the raised boss. On the Super Hawk, or what I think is a Super Hawk, there are no stampings in the raised boss, it just looks knurled. Am I looking in the wrong location? Also look at the doodads on the front of the motor attached to the exhaust valve access covers. I've never seen those on pictures of other 305's, are they common?

So I have a hodgepodge of junk I want to build into a cafe style bike. I'm thinking of stuffing the motor from the Super Hawk frame into the Scrambler frame. Reason is it runs and the other two motors are seized. Maybe that's a dumb idea and once I get further along I'll come to my senses.

The engine in the CB frame appears to be a CL, or CA motor. If it only has one carb, it's a CA, two carbs CL. The CB engines have a tach drive on left side of head, and electric start.

Thanks for the reply Davomoto. We rode that thing in the desert when I was a kid. I remember my older brother was the only one of us that could start it and I also remember his knee getting launched into the handle bars when it kicked back. Funny how I always remembered it being a 305 dream, of course now I realize what I have is an assortment of 305 and 250 parts all cobbled together. The two CL72 motors look identical to the one running motor with no ID that I assumed was a dream or hawk, except it kicks forward and the other two kick backwards. I'm still perplexed by those smoke stack looking pieces attached to the exhaust valve access covers.

So now I'm wondering if the non ID motor is also a 250. Sorry if this is a stupid question but are there any visual external differences between the 250 and 305 motors?

I have a spare set of wheels that probably came off the CL72 frame/motor. Did the scramblers run different rims and hubs than the dreams/hawks? The spare rims have a deep, cleaning ridge and the hub is more square on the sprocket side.

Not a dream nor a 305, I'm wondering how many other childhood memories are screwed up. Maybe that Cushman Eagle sitting in the garage isn't really an Eagle either.

I see two carbs and no starter, so possibly a CL? The frame nr is a '61. Those stacks on the valve covers look like some type of heat exchanger, maybe to aid cooling of the top end.

Wheels appears to be CL72. I have never seen the likes of those objects on the head, possibly for oil colling, or extra pressure venting. There may be more period mods inside that engine, worth tearing down and having a look for sure. The base of the cylinder will have a stamping, either 305 or 247, may be 249 can't remember for sure. That's really the only external difference. SC, he only gave 5 number of frame VIN, so can't say if it would be a match.

Was there supposed to be more numbers on the frame? I looked again and then scrubbed and scraped and there's only 5 numbers on that frame. Huge space between the CB77 and the numbers but there's nothing else there. Unless someone restamped it?
