Cam Shaft and Crank Shaft Alignment
What is the relationship between the cam shaft and the crank shaft stator when installing cam chain on CL77 305CC?

Some cam sprockets have a couple of dots (one at the tooth and the other at the mounting plate).
Others may have "0" at both locations and others many have "0" at the tooth and "0A" or some other letter at the mounting plate.
Lock your rotor so the pointer on the stator is in line with the "T" on the rotor.
Install the chain ends so they are on both sides of the mark (?) at the tooth and the plate is at exactly level with the flat of the head.
Now ya do need to be sure that the line on the end of the points cam is "UP not DOWN" as if it's "DOWN" the cams will be 180 degrees out and the engine won't start/run. ..........lm

If the cams have been out, is it possible to put the points cam back in upside down? I seem to recall that it can be, which is why is use the O marks and glad you mentioned the points cam which i had forgotten about.
So if the O is at the top and teh line on teh points cam points down, something is incorrectly assembled.

Without trying to outstep the bounds of a newbe.
It's good practice to mark things like chains and gears with something permanent.Such as paint or best layout blue before dissasembly.
Put the motor at tdc for the left cyl. then mark these items.
Once your assembly is complete always go through the manuals valve clearence check.If the motor is assembled correctly all things should follow though.

Excellent logic. We get lucky though. Honda mark the cam sprocket for us as indicated in loudmouse's earlier posting and we can slip the alternator rotor on to confirm TDC. the points cam has a mark to indicate how it's mounted.
So yes, it is a good idea to check that those factory marks are all still there and that they can be identified. Sometimes the marks are hard to find. The stamp may not be very deep for example.
So it's good to get the motor to TDC and check and it's still a good idea to mark the marks with a magic marker of paint pen to make it easy for assembly.
