3rd gear binding

As I turn the output shaft and the shift drum 3rd gear binds up. When watching what happens I see that the dogs on 2nd gear and the dogs on 3rd gear are butting up against each other.

Now-
This does not happen every time.
It happens with the cases put back together dry (but case bolts not torqued) and while shifting with the gear selector pedal( by hand).
Mainly happens when shifting from 4th down to 3rd.

Any thoughts?

Are you spinning the main shaft while shifting? have you looked at pics to be sure all gears are installed properly?

This is a bit embarassing, but, for the sake of clarity, which is the main shaft and which is the counter shaft?

i have been turning the "output shaft" (the part that has the drive sprocket attached to it) in the direction it travels when the bike is moving forward.

I am going to re check tranny installation with a correct picture later tonight.

That is the correct shaft to turn. It usually is a lot easier to have another person turning the shaft, while you shift the gears.

Great video! The dogs are quite different from A CB/CL. I'm not sure that that will be an issue when the engine is spinning. I saw that they do go together. Hopefully Ed will chime in on this one.

I don't know a whole lot yet, but I wondered that too... if it would be a problem when the engine is spinning, that is...
