Seems to be the case, with further exploration, that the problem is not there if I spin the gears a good 10 times, or so, before I switch gears. Which makes sense, since you don't normally switch rapidly from one gear to the next with out the gear set spinning a few hundred times in between, at least...

I could be wrong, but I think all you are seeing is the fact that the dogs will not engage until the shafts rotate a few times so that the dogs line up.

if they go in OK and are not binding after a few rotations, then it's not an issue.

Looks good to me mate. It will be spinning a whole lot faster than you can turn it. The gear selection should not be a problem.
