couple of problems

Post by pineapple dave » Tue Apr 20, 2010 9:39 am

1st off after riding all last summer my shifter has decided it will only toe shift not heel & toe. Went ahead and opened it up everything looked good but changed shifter fork Reassembled and still same problem and ideas ? Figure next is to open it all the way up and look at shifter drum. Also my throttle grip is very hard to twist, grease is fine but still needs a full twist to open it up good. Can't see any binding etc. but why it it's so hard ? thanks pineapple dave

Hey Dave,
Don't have any idea about the shifter business, maybe LM will pick up on your quest and chime in. But your throttle issue seems like it shouldn't be too hard to narrow down. You've had the tank off to check for binding? Does the engine rpm maintain upwards when you release the throttle? Release the throttle cable at both ends...does the cable slide back and forth easily in the jacket? With the cables disconnected, does the grip turn easily?
Maybe you've already done these checks, but we're here to give our best offering.
Hope it works out well for you.
Mike

If it shifts ok with the toe then the problem must be with the alignment of the heel portion with the footpeg.
It is much easier to feel the correct pressure and range of motion with your toe than with your heel.
Make sure the footpeg bracket is not interfering with the shifter motion.
Put the bike on the centerstand and shift gears with your hand moving the heel portion of the shifter.
The heel portion of the shifter should be higher than the level of the footpeg.
Try rotating the shifter counterclockwise a spline or two on the shift shaft.

Thanks I'll give it a look when I get home. I know it's not hitting the footpeg. But maybe checking the splines will be the answer. pd
