cant get my cb77 running right

Post by dads64 » Sun May 09, 2010 12:08 am

I inherited a 64 cb77 that didnt run for 30 years and I have completed a restoration. The entire top end was rebuilt. Carbs rebuilt. Electronic ignition installed and it runs horrible. It has a bad hesitation right off idle, has very low power. I'm wondering if maybe I got wrong parts or something. Are there any interchangable parts that would affect cam timing or compression. I havent touched it in more than a year but I'm about to work on it again. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think carbs and petcock sounds like a good place to start looking.
You would think points and compression would be pretty close.
Old gas from a year ago should at least get the wifes attention!!

This sounds like carbs to me. If you changed out the brass in the carbs, try using the old brass as some of the new AM kits just do not measure up. Then go to the FAQ section and do Ed's tune up recipe to the letter. Great place to start. Hope this helps ya out some,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,RW

thanks for the quick tips. I have tried using the old brass from the carbs and it doesnt change it much. However the old brass is in bad shape too. Maybe the carbs might have problems that cant be seen, the slides were frozen in the bore when I got them and I soked them in the solvent tank for a week to free them up. Is it possible that the slides are too worn? There is a vaccum leak from the throttle cables that could only get there from the slides. Has that ever been an issue to anyone? Is that vaccum leak normal?

Not too sure about a vacuum leak from the cables. You should have a rubber gasket on top of the carbs to avoid that. There should be NO vacuum leak at all and any present would cause a lean condition. I use water sprayed on the carb while running and any rpm change will tell ya so. Sometimes I use a carb cleaner also but I don't recommend a flammable material to anyone else.
Too dangerous.
Give us a rundown on how you set up/ adjusted these carbs and we can go from there.
