Well,John, ya did it and without the Paul Bunyan swinging shite.  I would, just to know what is in the trans., split the cases and have a look just for the peace of mind. There are a couple things in there you should replace  or at least inspect. Like the first gear bushing and the kick start pawl. Not to mention worn gear engagement dogs. These things if not found sooner  can cause a lot of grief later. Just a thought.
