Turns out that nothing was damaged. The spring hadn't been wound properly to create the necessary tension to keep the kickstart from moving forward on its own. It is all fixed. No noise, no movement, and it works perfectly. Thanks.

Good to know the trouble was "an easy fix" as usually the symptom is the warn trans parts. ..........lm

For a longer shift rod, you can use one from a CBR929rr. You'll need to get clevis rod ends. Try www.midwestcontrol.com Make sure to get one end with left hand threads and a matching lock nut. I have an extra rod for sale. Just PM me if you want it.

You know, after having just completed a 1000 mile ride on my SuperHawk to Mid-Ohio and back to Baltimore, as I was leaving my friend Lee's house nearby, I stopped at a stop sign and felt something touching the top of my right boot -- the kickstart lever! It did it twice at the stop sign, then didn't do it again. I rode home and it was fine.

I had John (mechanic) replace the roller bearing about 3 years ago, as it was doing the same thing then (usually in 2nd gear at about 20mph). Could it be that this new roller bearing is worn out again after only 3 years?????? Is it at all possible for the kick start lever to be also doing this from lack of use??? Are there other possibilities???

As i understand it the bearing you are referring to is the ring of short rollers inside the sleeve gear and running on the kickstarter shaft. The rollers start to rub through the case hardening on the shaft and that allows the sleeve gear to "grab" the shaft and rotate it.

It is possible that the replacement shaft has started to wear - assuming that he replaced the shaft and not just the rollers.

I'd inspect the side cover just in case it's something simple like a return spring that lost its tang or slipped out of engagement. If that's all clear and it keeps doing it, I'd pull the motor and slip off the bottom crankcase half to see what's going on.

You may be able to grab the splined end of the shaft and if you detect any excessive play, the shaft is worn.

Vince, only 3 years, but how many miles? What kind of oil are you using?

3 years - probably about 9,000 miles. I change the oil every 1000 miles, and I use Shell Rotella 15w40.

I spoke to John today, and he said that he changed both the shaft and the roller bearing at the same time.

He did wonder if it's possible to do away with the kickstart altogether, if he has to open it up. Worthwhile?

He also advised me to keep an eye on it when I ride it again, and if that kickstart lever moves again, to stop riding it. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending upon your perspective) I've been down this road before, so I know what to do if it happens.
