are you rattle canning these pieces or are you using a real paint gun? The results look good in the pictures either way.

paint info

Post by mobilyte » Thu Jul 15, 2010 3:32 pm

i did the undercoat and rattle can outdoors, we did the primer/sealer/color/clear in the booth.

undercoat - it was difficult to get good coverage without over applying...leading to terrible bubbling

rattle can - rustoleum 7716 heat resistant silver

primer - glasurit epoxy primer, a quick sand and scuff after the parts hung around for a few weeks and they were ready for color

sealer - put this on parts (fork cases and footpeg brackets) that missed primer day

black - glasurit 55 series 1250 deep black. painted everything except the frame, swingarm and center stand

silver - glasurit 55 series formula for sunbeam silver metallic C2M MA097.50 (it's listed as a 70's mazda color)

handlebars

Post by mobilyte » Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:25 pm

the mid height bars that were on the bike polished up nicely, but it was missing the dimmer/horn switch assembly. the starter button wasnt working when i picked up the bike and i managed to break the starter button wire. i dont have a single matching pair of levers either...

i think the original dimmer/horn harness is blue, but one of the spares had a gray harness that i preferred. the contact board of the dimmer switch was shaped differently and didnt fit the switch housing, so i swapped and resoldered those.

i checked the order of the red/green/blue wires several times, but i'm not sure if i wired the switch correctly. the forward position is normal and back is bright...?

shifter and rear brake

Post by mobilyte » Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:30 pm

cleaned up and polished the shifter and rear brake pedal parts, they'll eventually need to be properly refinished. i've temporarily used paper clips as cotter pins for the shifter linkage.

exhaust headers

Post by mobilyte » Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:33 pm

these were the first chrome parts i attempted to clean up, and i made the mistake of bead blasting them before polishing. blasted and rattle can painted the exhaust flanges/spacers.

rear wheel

Post by mobilyte » Thu Jul 15, 2010 5:05 pm

by now, i wanted to ride and stopped trying to take step-by-step assembly pics!

the rear wheel got the same treatment as the front wheel. rattle can painted the axle spacer and cleaned/polished the axle/nut/adjusters.

i couldnt put on the rear wheel until i sorted out the rear shocks...
