My timing
My timing
Help. I have searched long and hard on the site for an answer to my problem...I have set up my points according to what I have read here. Points begin to open as rotor hits "f". My bike gets fuel and spark. It will not start. Is it possible to be 180 degrees out on these dreams? How can I check this and better yet how can I remedy this? Thanks for any help, Jeff H.

Neither. I have been working toward getting this bike on the road since I got it last fall. I have had it running before, even took it for a spin down the road, but that was a few months back. I replaced the points on it and followed the procedure from Paperslammer's post. The timing seems to be ok. I hooked up a light circuit through my points to ground and the light comes on as the points open. Bike will not start. Won't even hint at starting. Float bowl is full. There is spark to the plug wires. I am changing the plugs tonight. They were dead for some reason. (new plugs too). The other plugs I have have a different size nut on them and I have to pick up a socket to fit them. It should start. That's why I'm wondering if somehow I threw the timing out real bad.busaken wrote:is this a fresh engine rebuild or have you been riding the bike?

Hi Mr. Mouse. I went out and checked the points. No voltage while just sitting. Key at first position; no volts until I hit the starter; while pressing the start button=4-5 volts. Battery is fully charged, new modern rectifier from Retro Bikes. Lots of voltage through the spark plug wire. No volts at any other key position. Here is a pic of my frame number...LOUD MOUSE wrote:Do ya have 12 Volts at the points?

Those zeros still mess me up. :0 Should I have 12 volts at the coil wire at all times or just when the key is on? My bet is just when the key is on so the battery doesn't drain. When you say wiring fault, are you talking about an exposed wire grounding out somewhere or possibly frayed and not allowing enough juice through?
