No spark 305 CL77 1965

Post by Larrygry » Tue Sep 07, 2010 11:39 am

Hello folks. I have been a regular visitor here and I am now registered and able to post on here since I got a new computer. Evidently, my old computer was somehow blocking my ability to to log in even though was registered.

So I hook up a battery charger to the battery cables and I am getting the headlight to work. It appears some of the bulbs are no good (neutral, high beam indicator, & speedo-lights). I am getting juice to the points, evidenced by a small spark if I stick a points file in there. Not enough to feel it though.

I have the old 250cc shop manual but darn I cant seem to find a wiring diagram in there? Did get one on here but I need to either enlarge it or be able to print it out in color in order to read it properly.

SO I attempt to follow the wiring and I end up finding what appears to be an electrical device that is not listed in the either shop manual or what I can read/see on the wiring diagram. The device is a small silver colored cube 1" x 1" x 2" and it is (was) strapped to a frame post in front of the battery. It says on it:

DX ( or an X like figure)

12V

RS21

JAPAN

Has 3 wires coming from it:

1. Yellow which appears to be spliced into an original yellow line on the bike

2. Green that goes nowhere

3. Black that goes nowhere

I cant see any place that the green and black wires have come detached from????

Points surfaces seem to be in decent shape. Bike supposedly last ran in 2001 or 2002.

From "what I can see" with side covers, tank, headlamp & tool box removed other wiring "appears" to be intact

Thoughts & ideas please?

Once I solve this issue I then have to free up at least one carb float. Any ideas on what to initally use on the carbs before I probably have end up removing and dismantling them? Seafoam? Any rubber components inside them that might be damaged by conventional cleaners?

Thank you.

I just answered one of my questions

The small, rectangular, silver colored 12V device I think is the directional relay switch for 305s that had directionals on them. I think most 305s shipped to USA did not have the directionals but device is still on the bike with two unsed wires protruding from it. I THINK that's what it is???

Larrygry,
First of all, welcome to the forum.
Next, do yourself and us a big favor and go back to the registration section and fill in your location. Some one will bark at you for not doing it so, now is as good a time as any.
Not sure what you're dealing with in the wiring, if you can post a pic it would speed things up perhaps.
I like to strip my carbs and clean them with carb cleaner and compressed air. Someone here used a 50/50 vinager and water solution and boiled their carbs and it worked well. Just make sure that ALL jets and passages are open and free of blockage and you will save a lot of frustration.
Then when you do get spark and carbs cleaned, read the tune up recipe in the FAQ section on how to set up the carbs, points and timing. Works like a champ. RW

A lack of points' sparking is indicative of a good condenser; connect a spark plug to one of the HT leads and ground the plug's thread -- flick the points for that side open (from closed) and you should get a healthy spark across the electrodes. Wear a good, insulating glove on the hand with which you hold the plug!

Black is +12V ignition, green is ground but yellow carries AC from the alternator/dynamo/generator (whichever you prefer to call it) to the rectifier and tees-off to the light switch for coupling to the pink when the headlight is selected (for additional charge support). It could be a winker relay or some kind of retro-fitted voltage regulator (unnecessary). Can you post a decent image here?

in addition, some of your lights that may not be working could just possibly be a bad ground or a bad solder. i had a tail light that didnt work, it was just the bracket needed tighted to the fender. High beams didnt work and it was a dry corroded solder. Things like that you can just keep trouble shooting assuming the bulbs are good.

good luck.
