H4 headlight unit

Post by e3steve » Sat Nov 13, 2010 3:17 pm

Just over a year ago I posted here, within the topic, an H4 headlight solution; I've just edited-in that the supplier, Cycle Seductions Inc, seems to have evaporated, so I've added that the 162mm beam unit can be obtained direct from Candlepower themselves.

Anyway, I took a last blast, late this pm, to the shops. The ride home was in the dark, and it's the first time I've ridden for any distance and tried the light properly. Well impressed! The 35/35W Philips MotoVision halogen lamp, ¾ of the way down Goffy's lightbulb page, floods a good, extended dipped beam and main beam projects an astonishing distance, both with a good, bright white light that belies the humble, lowly wattage.

The two together amount to a highly-recommended CB headlight upgrade.

Thanks for the feedback Steve,

Just out of curiosity, I'm guessing you bought just the light and purchased the 35/35w bulb separately? Any reservations about going with their 45/45w kit? I'm guessing the 60/55w kit would be a bit too much strain on the generator.

A pleasure. I wanted to keep The Forum UTD, as I got a PM about the Cycle Seductions link being 'dead'.

Yes, I bought the bulb separately. I was thinking about the 45/45W as I perused Goffy's site; if you go the LED taillight route then the extra 10W at the headlight shouldn't be much of a problem. The 60/55W standard auto-bulb is a no-no with a stock alternator.

Understood. I'm hoping to update to Rick's Stator. LED lighting doesn't do it for me on a bike this old. Something about it just doesn't fit the look. I'll probably still stick with the lower wattage as you did since your visibility seems to be fine based on your review.

Just FYI: the Philips MotoVision lamp has a brighter, whiter and longer projection than my 'standard' 35/35W halogen that I found locally; and is also a vast increase in output -- I'd estimate between 30 & 50% -- compared to the Bosch BA20 halogen that I had in my (perfect condition) OEM beam unit.

Obviously not as bright white as 6000K xenons that I've retrofitted to my cars (damn, they're good to drive behind!).
