305 5 speed305 5 speedWhile I was out in CA last week, an old Dist 37 racing buddy I saw at the Catalina races invited me to look at a pile of 305 racing parts he aquired last spring.
He has them stored in a friend's warehouse and we didn't have nearly enough time to dig through all of it, but he has one complete CL77E engine that was originally built as a racing spare, about 10 big storage boxes full of parts and lots of misc stuff; enough to build one complete CL77 and an engine or two. I opened a couple of the boxes and this gear set was sitting in a plastic bag on top of a bunch of loose transmission parts. I think it's a CYB 5 speed - it has a little rust but otherwise looks good and doesn't appear to have much time on it. We made a deal on the spot for me to go out there next summer and help him build a rat racer 305 like we used to ride and race in the 60's in exchange for some of his parts. He's willing to sell some of the exotic stuff to finance the build so he doesn't have to come out of pocket for paint and the few parts he'll have to buy so I offered to shop the 5 speed around for him. If anyone is interested, you can PM me.
Wow, that's pretty cool. I can't even imagine what the value of that would be. There's an incomplete gear kit on ebay right now that's over $1000 with a few days still left: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 500wt_1182
Imagine what a complete one would go for. The racing Nova's list for about $2,100 plus tax and shipping from England so it seems like a complete CYB in good shape should go for at least that but ultimately, it's only worth what someone will pay for it. That one on ebay is interesting because he has the installation paperwork to go with it. I don't have any experience with CYB 5 speeds but I've been told that they have a lot of neutrals if they're not installed properly. That's one reason why I like a good old crossed 4 speed and a few counter shaft sprockets.
I bet the guy on ebay wouldn't mind getting you a scan of the install he has to go with your gear kit. Were there any other interesting parts your friend had? I sent the guy on ebay an e-mail asking for a copy of his installation guide this afternoon after I saw your post, thanks for the heads up.
My pal has about 10 boxes of stuff but we only had time to look in 2 of them before we had to leave for another appointment. I saw a complete engine that we think has a 350 kit in it, a couple of 305 heads with cams that Soichiro never intended his babies to run and ports that look like you could drive a Volkswagen through and some other very tasty looking stuff in a pile behind the boxes. He hasn't had time to do anything with the stuff since he bought it last Spring and doesn't really know what he has. I'll fix that when I go back out there this summer to build a racer with him.
Was it mostly engine related stuff or did he have any body parts as well like the race fender, foot pegs, etc? I've pretty much told you everything I can share at this point.
I'm sure it's all CL based flattrack/TT stuff because I knew the guy this collection came from (now deceased) and I was very familiar with what he had up to about 10 years ago. He was very active in AHRMA and Eddie Mulder's Class C series and I can guarantee you he never would have soiled his hands with anything CB or - GOD FORBID - anything CA!!!!! ;-))
