Carburetor Cover Latch 305 Dream

Post by quidger » Sat Dec 25, 2010 1:53 pm

I am missing the latch that holds the carburetor covers together on my 1967 Dream. I have both covers. None of the after market suppliers seem to have one. The latches for the side covers are plentiful in the after market but not for the carburetor cover.

I am wondering if it might be possible to adapt the latch from the electrical side cover to work as a carb cover latch. The length seems to be about right.

Can someone tell me if the only difference in the two latches is the end of the piece that twists into the receiving piece of the second carb cover. Is the diameter of the rod part of the latch the same as the diameter of the one for the electrical latch and is the knob the same?

Also if someone has a photo of the end of the carb cover latch to post so I can see if I can fabricate something it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not exact match, but probably close enough.
The battery cover shaft is longer and the plastic knob is larger diameter, but probably adaptable.
The metal shaft diameters are the same on both, you would just have to shorten a battery cover shaft and fashion a T shaped end for the connection.
Pics attached
(the 2.4" dimension is measured from the inside edge of the plastic knob to the centerline of the "T" cross pin as assembled)

Brewsky:

Thanks for the great details and the photos. I think I can adapt the side cover latch. I appreciate your help.

No problem,
The covers do appear on ebay occasionally, but are usually not cheap

Thought I'd throw this out there since it might be of use to somebody with a similar need, but not working on a 100 point restoration.

Some good mom and pop hardware stores have a hardware department that is a collection of cardboard pull out drawers with everything from nuts and bolts to clear plastic gizmos to mount mirrors on walls to aluminum door latches. I'm sure most of you have seen these. Well, one of those drawers is a collection of plastic bakelite knobs. Some have female threaded brass inserts and some have male studs. These can be modified to fit a lot of applications with a little ingenuity. I've even considered seeing if they have one that I could machine out the center and epoxy to a properly threaded brass ring to reproduce a CL77 right cover latch, which screws over the ignition switch barrel.

I have not looked specifically for a match to a Honda latch knob, but would think there is something close that could be used. If not for your 305 than possibly for other parts made from unobtanium.

regards,
Rob
