Leaking Petcock CA77

64 Dream. I rebuilt the petcock with a Retro Bikes kit. I left the cork piece in the bottom at first with new rubber on top. I put sand paper on a flat smooth piece of granite and sanded the lever smooth on both sides. Put it back together and it leaked in the middle where the lever comes out when in On but not in Reserve.

Then I changed put the new rubber on the bottom even though it seems to be thinner than the cork. Sanded the lever a little more. Then it leaked when On and Reserve.

Took it apart again and it seemed like I didn't have the bottom rubber part in quite right. Put it back on and it leakes in all 3 positions.

I have tried just snuggin up the screws on the bottom of the tank and cranking them down real tight. That doesn't seem to make any difference.

I searched this website and could find very little on leaking petcocks. Has anyone ever experienced this kind of trouble. Do I need cork pieces? If so where can I get them?

I appreciate any help anyone can give.

Conbs, I wish I could help out but I'm in the same situation as you were prior to getting the rebuild kit.

Have you got it working properly with no leaks and if yes, what was the issue?

I need to pull the trigger on a kit in the next week or so...

Conbs,Did you install the 3 nylon washers on the retaining screws? I also found out if you over tighten the screws it will cause leakage.

Bbap, Looking at Bill Silver's Dream resto guide, he shows an exploded view of the Petcock with the round cork piece under the lever and a rubber piece on top. The kit I got had both pieces in rubber.

I am going to try putting the cork bottom piece back in, but turning it over to expose a smooth surface. It seems to be in fair shape, though it might be a little thinner than when new.

If that doesn' work, I guess I am left with trying to find a new cork piece, but I haven't sourced that yet. It may be a place for you to start.

Just go buy a sheet of proper thicknenss cork gasket and cut your own. That's what I did. Jeff

The fiber washers looked to be in great shape and I used them, but will look more closely. Thanks for the help.

What is the proper thickness for the cork? All I have is the old cork piece and no way to know how much it is compressed from it original thickness.

I'm not sure what the exact thickness would be but the package of various gaskets I bought had two sheets of cork with two different thickness'. I picked the one that was just a little thicker than my original gasket and hand cut it to size. It worked fine. :)
