New voltage coil ??
New voltage coil ??just cruising ebay and i'm wondering if anybody has tried one of the new style voltage coils from classic cycle parts ( central ohio) they are selling them for $52 but say they will work for our dreams... i was going to get one and a new style rectifer as well ,,, i figured i'd ask if anybody has tried either of these products yet ???if your not worried about a perfect concours style restoration and just want a nice dependable rider i'm hoping these will work.... any thoughts....np
re new coilHey steve, it's not that there's anything wrong with the oem style , it's just easier to find the new style as a brand new working piece, the used original ones i see on ebay , i would tend to worry they are no better than mine,, if i could find a NOS coil ( for a resonalble price ) i'd prob buy it...i guess it boils down to intent... and i just want to build a decent reliable cool little bike ... nick
I can't say that, in the 7+ years that I've been a forum member and reader here, I've ever seen a post where a (CB/CL) coil has actually been the faulty part in the event of a breakdown or non-starter.
Not that they don't fail, I guess; but I'd say that, in the Grand Scheme of Ageing Honda reliability, the coils seem to be pretty much bomb-proof. Just my obs....
re coils..Hey steve-o ,, i'm more thinking about the plug wires ( did i forget to mention i'm talking about the CA 78) it looks to me like the plug wires are a permanent part of the coil, and the wires seem very hard and brittle, and since i just picked up the bike i also got new condenser, plugs, points,, and since there is no spark at all at either plug,, i figured i start and replace the points, condenser , and i'm hoping the plug wires are decent , but when i put a battery to it , before i could even hit the starter button just to see what would happen, poof a little puff of smoke came up from the either the coil or the rectifier , it was to close to figure out where it came from,, so i shut it down and since i have those parts any way ,, i thought i'd just change one at a time and see who the guilty party was,, any thoughts/hints/tips... thanks in advance...np
I would definitely do the rectifier first.

If you got the puff of smoke with the ign key OFF then I'd say your rectifier is the culprit, as Brew states (he's been there!). The rec is permanently connected to the battery +ve and unfused. I would, and have before now, recommend installing an in-line fuse to the red/white wire (on a Dream). Make it a 25A; that'll be ample (arf!) for the achievable charge rate and will protect the rec wiring against a short circuit.
I'm not au fait with the Dream's ign coil arrangement, so I can't comment on how the HT cables get replaced.
