Bit the bullet on a NOS battery. Any additive I should use?

Post by Cheburashka » Sun Mar 20, 2011 11:16 pm

I've been waiting for a whole month for the Ebay seller who told me that the WPS battery he sent me was actually a Yumicron to kick me a refund. Finally got the refund and was told to keep the battery. I filled it, charged it, and tried to mount the battery, and find that it's not the right size at all. So much for the 12N9-3A1. Won't fit my '65.

Today, I bought one of the NOS Wisco ones on Ebay, and I want that thing to last. I have a battery tender, so I'll be able to keep the voltage topped up. Has anyone tried any additives to keep sulfation or evaporation down? I know Yuasa uses some kind of additive from the factory.

A battery tender can boil out a regular wet cell battery. I've had that happen a few times with different tenders. So be careful. Best you can hope for is a few years if you ride the bike regularly and keep and eye on it. Just watch the tender use. As for additives, that's like snake oil, who knows what really works. Best is to just keep it topped off with clean distilled water and keep it charged.

battery

I purchased a zero maintenance free glassmatt battery from MOTOBATT for my 66 dream model MB9U. The terminals are desinged for It was $55.99. I found a 10% off coupon on line so I got for around $52.

I'm going to install it this afternoon. Will report how it fits and works out.

Doesn't the '66 take a different battery?

I read somewhere that after '65 they went over to the 12N9 3A. A lot of folks advertise that model as the proper fit for the CA77 in general, but it sure doesn't fit the pre '65 bikes. I looked at the MB9U and it seems to have the exact same dimensions as the 12N9-3A.

I installed the Motobatt battery this afternoon and it fit perfectly and it gives about a third more cranking speed than the Yuasa ever did. I'm really impressed!

Forgot to add it was sent with free ups shipping!
