She lives again

Post by dppeter » Sun Oct 15, 2006 6:42 am

A couple days ago I finally got one of the Superhawks I have been working on done. I put this one together out of a lot of parts (I have a few old ones that have been sitting in my barn). Rebuilt the engine - bored to S4, carbs, checked all the bearings etc. She started up on the second kick and with a little carb adjustment runs pretty well. After working on this one for the last month or more it was nice to get her together and running. I went through everything on this bike and even though some of my parts didn't start out as pristine as I would like she came out pretty well. I took the time to clean/paint/refurbish a lot of my other extra parts as well and went ahead and built up two more engines - one a CB and one a CL. The extra CB is bored to S12 (337cc). I'll try and get another body done this winter so my son and I can ride the two of them. The extra CL engine is destined for an old chopper frame that it came out of. All I can say is it is a thrill to be working on these again. At the moment I'm having a ball!

Sounds like you work fast. I wish I had the time to get an engine together in a month. Post some pictures so we can see your work!

The first engine took a while to finish, mostly because I hadn't worked on these for a few years. I forgot the retainers for the transmission shaft (the ones that look like a half a piston ring). So I had to pull the engine out, split the crankcase and install them. Then I realized I had forgotten the "o" rings that go with the head gasket so I had to take that apart again and install them. You have to understand I was really putting this engine together from parts. I took a few of these engines apart long ago and stored them, didn't touch them for years and now am back in the game. The second and third engine I did went together very quickly. Mostly because I had already cleaned and checked all the parts, painted the covers/cases/heads. The third one went together in an afternoon including the carb rebuilds. I hate to admit how many things I have forgotten about these engines. My old brain cells are trying to recall everything again and as I said before, it's been a lot of fun. This time around I have just a tad more money so I can replace some of those items that I would have just used before and though - "hey, that's close enough".
I'll get some pictures posted of things as soon as I am able.
Take care

Here are a couple pictures of my restored bike. Don't jump me about the mix of late and early model parts. I put this together out of misc parts from my barn collection. I think she came out pretty well. I couldn't find a chain guard so I made one from sheet metal and painted it up to match.

Looks good man. The bike came out great.
Kinda looks like my pile of locked up CB77 motors you have there... :)
