screaming noise

Post by dreaming » Mon Jun 06, 2011 8:21 am

Well, first things first. Bike ran decent yesterday, but not perfect, when I picked it up. I took the bowl off, cleaned out the crap, then threw the old seal away (obviously going to need a carb rebuild anyway). I put it on the battery tender over night, went out this morning to start it up, and it will turn over three or four times then SCREEEETCH. Scared me and I stopped. YEEEEHHHHH!!!!! My first rabbit to chase.
I'm a major novice, but will not do anything I can't undo. My lack of knowledge and slow methodical way of doing things makes for slow going, but at least keeps mistakes to a minimum. Also, are there any resources for common rebuilds of trouble shooting out there for these bikes, like a tutorial of carb rebuilds or other common problems?

I may have bitten off more than I can chew at the moment, but what better way to choke!

Update your sig to let us know where you're at. Might be a member close who could give some pointers.

Did it try to start and the motor squealed or was it the starter motor itselve squealing.

BTW, on a long standing motor you should never just try to start it. Should pull the valve caps and flood the top end with oil. Should pull the plugs and kick it over a LOT to get oil started through all the passages. Only then should you really try to start it. This assume fresh oil BTW.

The bike was a weekly rider for the guy I bought it from, and I road it just yesterday. It tries to start, turns over nicely, then about 3-5 turn overs into it it goes WWWHHHEERRRRRRRRRRR!

Sounds like the starter. If it kick starts and doesn't make the noise you've likely narrowed down your problem.

Starter clutch most likely. It is located behind the rotor, and you'll need a puller to remove the rotor. You can sdo a search on this site for all of the info you're seeking.
