If you have a headlight beam unit with a removable bulb, yours should be the
American
Pre-
Focus flange. I know Goffy has them in the UK (nr 17
here), but someone else may know of a US supplier.

There were 3 different headlight assemblies used on Dreams. Sealed beam and two with removable bulbs. You have to figure out which one you have to determine what you will do about it.
Your high beam indicator should have been working all along whenever you had the H/L switch on high beam.

Thanks for the post. I definitely have the sealed-beam type of light. Do you think it's possible that I blew a fuse (I looked for a fusebox but couldn't find one...do they even have them?!!).
After reading all the posts, I do agree that the indicator light should have been on when the hibeams were on but that was never the case so perhaps there was some underlying electrical malfunction?
Thanks, all, for being patient with my questions. I am obviously not real mechanical but want to at least try to figure things out before hauling to a dream-fixer!

There is a fuse on the Dream. It is located on the left side and will be in close proximity to the battery. It is an inline fuse. I believe it is 15amps.

So when the switch is in the aft position, that should be high beam? I guess my switch is hooked up backward then. Thanks for setting me strait Steve:)

thanks all! I will first check out the fuse and (hopefully!) that is my issue as I'd imagine it's worlds easier to get a replacement for than the headlamp!!

If your fuse was blown I don't think your high beam indicator would light up. There may be a problem with the ground for the indicator light or a loose connection that kept it from coming on before.
Exploded tail light bulb would seem to be a different problem from the high beam indicator being on with the H/L switch in either position. The high beam indicator should be off in the middle position as should the headlight. The indicator should only light when the H/L switch is toward the front of the bike, as that is when the high beam is lit. The indicator should be off when H/L switch is toward the back of the bike. Seems like there is a problem somewhere between the H/L switch and the headlight bulb. Could the connections on the back of your headlight be shorting across your speedo case? Did you try turning the headlight on with it removed from the housing?
