Restore?

Post by conbs » Tue Sep 06, 2011 5:35 pm

That is quite a bike. Air Pump. Registration holder. Bags.

You clearly have some chrome issues, but before you get too carried away, you might try some Flitz on your chrome bits. I can't tell for sure from the photos, but it looks like some of it might cleam up pretty well. I have been absolutely amazed at what Flitz and elbow grease will do. It will not get rid of pits, but normally I find they are much smaller than I had thought and the shiney chrome sort of hides them.

Same for the paint. It has a few scratches, but some polishing compound and carnuba wax might resurrect that paint pretty well. You could end up with a decent looking original bike - with some patina - instead of a restored bike and save yourself a pile of cash. Not to mention that you could enjoy riding it over the next two years and refurbish it as you go.

To each his own. Just a thought.

Thanks Conbs, I think it is quite a find myself! (with all the spares etc).
I am not opposed to patina, might be cool - it just depends on how confident I am about all the things that won't get replaced. I really don't know how secure I could be with a 50 year old wiring harness!
I did take the mufflers off when I was getting it running 18 years ago and I polished the bejesus out of htem with rubbing compound, they look ok, but the chrome on the wheels is really messed up compared to how the mufflers were.
I have not found a serial number anywhere near the side covers (or underneath them).

Great bike!

Serial number is low down on left hand side behind and below the stop lamp switch / spring, written vertically.

Thanks!
20661 is my serial number.
I had not figured out how to find the serial number much less interpret it yet, so I suspect one of you fine people will let me know what this number means before I get back to it.
cheers

Hi

Not much to interpret except that the first '2' indicates a 1962 model.

Ok, had the restore guy come by and check it out.
He says $900-$1400 I can get it on the road - he liked the patina idea too, and after looking up close at the bike some more I think that is what I will do.
Ordered a NOS CA77 wiring harness (they have to be practically the same thing, right?).
I need to get battery, key or ignition, and tires/tubes for sure just to get it mobile.
Anyone have a good source for 3.25 X 16 tires? I tried the links I found searching through honda305.com but nobody seems to have them in stock.
Cheers

I recently found this site and ordered a 3.25-16 cheng shin......received it quickly and was very pleased with the price and service.

They also have the 3.25-16 Shinko SR208 in stock as well as a V-Rubber dual sport in the same size.

They only have one Cheng Shin left though.
