Kick start sometimes slams down.

So I have about 400 miles on my CA77 rebuild. I've noticed that sometimes when downshifting into first gear and sometimes second, that my kickstart will slam down and then pop back up on its own. It's kind of an early CA, a '63 model. So I'm not sure if the earlier ones had more transmission problems or not. I often have trouble shifting. Not sure what to think of it. I'm quite certain I have the kick starter/right side cover assembled correctly. Any pointers or ideas?

Usually an indication of a worn kicker shaft. Case splitter to replace.

Also an indication that you should not ride the bike. I've had the exact thing happen to me twice, and if you continue to ride it as is, you could possibly do damage to your transmission.

So what should I look for in a servicable shaft as opposed to one that should be rejected?

Jethro,

There are two areas that are hard chromed. Make sure there's no galling, and that the hardening is not wearing off. Also that the splines are not twisted or stripped.
