2nd gear won't release

Post by highskyflyn » Thu Oct 20, 2011 2:38 pm

So for starters I'm new to the forum and I hope none of my questions are too dumb to answer but Im working on a 68 dream 305. I have just recently put my bike back together after years of being apart and ran into some issues. One that I'm not for sure of, and sorry if it has already been answered on here, is the gears are sticking. I shift into second and begin to speed up and it takes off and won't slow down. If I pull in the clutch it red lines RPMs and I have to shut it off. After reading around I think it might be the plates are sticking and just need cleaning. I would love some clarification that thats the problem before I begin the tear down of of the clutch plates.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but if it redlines when you pull in the clutch that means the clutch is disengaging like it should, but sounds like the throttle is not backing off. A sticking clutch will make it take off when you put it in first and won't shift properly.

It could be in the carburator (slide sticking), possibly from overtightening mounting bolts, throttle cable sticking (lack of lube or too sharp of bends) or in the throttle slide on the handlebar (old hard grease or lack of lube.)

Thats a good point about the slide sticking. I had previously re lubed the throttle tube with new grease and the throttle cable is brand new so it very well could be the slide sticking. Also I have the throttle twisted all the way back when it does it and the RPMs still red line. The only thing is that after it does it and i have to shut it off, when I start it back up and pull in the clutch the gears are fairly difficult to shift through. Thats the reason I think its a tranny problem. Also I adjusted the clutch cable as much as I can and there is no improvement.

Have you had the right side cover off? If so you might have lost the ball bearing that goes inside the clutch adjuster and pushes against the rod. Make sure you adjust the clutch correctly, follow lm's instructions here;

great, thanks a bunch for the info I have had the cover off and don't remember seeing a ball bearing so Ill check on that. Also would you happen to know how I can lube the slide in the carb or why it would be sticking? Again thank you so much for your time for a newbie on here.

I haven't had that problem myself, but from what I've gathered if you overtighten the carburator mounting bolts you can distort the body and cause the slide to stick. I don't think lubing it is a solution. It just needs to be clean and slide smoothly. I've heard of slides getting put in backwards as well, although I'm not sure it's possible in the dream carb.

I agree with Stan....it's either the slide sticking or the cable sticking.

The cable adjuster on mine would stick on the frame tab under the tank and cause a similar problem after turning the handlebar full right.

The slide won't go in backwards unless the alignment tab is gone inside the carb body. (or it is in upside down)
