Was running.....now it's not

Post by Kigsby » Sun Nov 06, 2011 11:42 am

I had my '62 dream running, but it was sputtering a bit so I adjusted the idle. It would run well but when I let off the throttle, it would stall. I turned the air screw out 1 1/8 and I have the idle screw out 1 1/2. I put fresh gas in and the battery is reading 11 volts. Spark plugs are new. Now it won't turn over at all. It cranks, but won't turn over. What should I try next?

I'll charge it right now! I thought 11 volts was close enough. (I'm new to this stuff) I bought the bike because I really liked the looks, but mainly I really want to learn how they work. I'll charge it and report back! Thanks

OK, I charged the battery - it's at 12.89. I cleaned the strainer in the petcock and put an additional filter in the line. I tried to start it, it turned, started and then died. Tried again, turned and turned, started then died. There is fresh gas and the petcock is on. Is it not getting fuel? What should I try next?

Just an update. I charged the batter (12.89 volts) put in new spark plugs, tested spark. fuel was getting to the carbs. Still wouldn't start. I went to take out the carb because I figured it must have a stuck float, clogged jet, etc. Reached in to take off the air hose, and it wasn't attached! There was no clamp on the carb side. Hooked it up and she started right up! Something I will remember before I start pulling the carb out! Now I'm onto checking the points/timing....
