Intro and hello

Post by bmac999 » Wed Nov 09, 2011 12:11 pm

Greetings, just wanted to introduce myself, I'm the proud new owner of a '62/'63? Dream 305. This will be my first time attempting a restoration, and I've already found a wealth of knowledge on this site.

As evidenced above, was hoping to get a little help with numbers:
Frame: CA72 310419
Engine: CA77E 1002403

I understand that the frame # starting with a "3" indicates 1963 Model, and that the engine more than likely is not the original one out of the factory due to the separation in numbers. However, the title lists it as a 1962 and don't know what information that was based on.

She's looking a bit naked right now, but I have about 90% of the parts needed in boxes from the previous owner.

Thanks for any help and will try and stay updated with progress, thanks!

Hi! I'm a new owner too! I just got my 1962 Dream a couple of weeks ago. Its a little more put together than yours, but I have never done this before and have no idea what I'm doing, so you'll probably be finished with yours long before me! I'm reading books, every forum question on Dreams, and just starting to get my hands dirty! I'm finding out lots of things that are different about these old bikes and things that are different even with the same bike, different years! Look forward to watching your project!

Hi bmac,
Looks like the frame was originally a 250 Dream and a previous owner put a 305 engine in there. I'm sure others will be able to help with exact year of both your engine and frame.

Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of valuable information on this site, as well as extremely helpful members. I own a 1963 305 Dream, while I was restoring it, I found lots of CA72 parts that were used in my bike. After talking to Bill Silver, he told me that Honda did that with the earlier Dreams. My bike has been all original with no tampering, and when we cracked the engine cases open, low and behold there were some 250 parts used inside of it. I wouldn't have known the difference except they were stamped CA72. So, with that being said, I think some of the parts are obviously interchangeable. Someone told me once that the only difference between the 305 and the 250's were the size of the pistons???? (increased horsepower). Is that true? Anyways, welcome and just like Kigsby stated, some of the the earlier Dreams parts, are different than later models. I found this out the hard way. So if you have the parts that came with the bike, that is fantastic! If not, try to find out the year of the parts that you are buying before purchasing. Good luck and enjoy your Dream.

HONDA started with the 250 then came the 305.
The following doesn't include the First DREAM of the 50's.
Naturally with the only difference being the pistons and head the rest was of the 250 design and manufacture.
The rotor will show C72 or C72(L) and I can't think of another part which shows 250. ?????????
Even the carbs are the same as I recall. "22MM"
There are several frame parts which changed as the bike evolved.
Like the previous member stated "be sure of the year of issue for any frame parts. ........lm

Wow thanks for the good info all. I hadn't even thought about it being a 250/305 mix as the engine fits the frame perfectly. But if a lot of parts are interchangable it starts to makes sense, will def keep an eye out as I break her down more.

Looks like I just have to pay extra attention when ordering parts. Thanks again!
