clutch adjuster/spring

Post by drab » Sat Nov 12, 2011 8:18 pm

Hi All,

question about clutch cables

Two photos attached, first is old clutch cable. When assembled the clutch thread and adjuster rests at 90 degrees or there abouts.

I bought a new cable from Charlies Place that was specifically for low bars. When this new cable is assembled the thread and adjuster rests at 115 degrees or there abouts.

You can see the difference in the amount of cable between the thread and the joint at the top of the crankcase...maybe its about an inch or so. What results with the new cable is that the cable will NOT spring back after it is depressed, I am guessing because the spring is in too much tension to begin with.

The new cable is as adjusted both at the lever and the crankcase to provide the most amount of cable (i.e. the least amount of tension) but it seems like I still need another inch or so.

Is there a way of adjusting this at all, or is the cable just too short?
And if so, is there any way of lengthening?

Thanks for the help!

Turn this adjusters to the bottom then adjust the large cast adjuster in the case. ............lm

hmmmm.

Thanks for the help!

all the adjusters on the cable are at the bottom....but my latest thought is that I could trim an inch off the casing to drop the end of the cable further into the crankcase to get more length between the adjuster and the end of the cable....?? The difference between old and new cables is not so much the total length of cable, but the length of cable that can be adjusted at the bottom near the crankcase.

Also, the large crankcase adjuster moves the cable assembly "laterally", increasing or decreasing the amount of force on the clutch rod...Am I understanding this correctly? Does it have an effect of the angle that the spring will sit at?

Thanks again for the help

The pic doesn't show the threaded part bottomed. ......lm

Yes, in the top pic at the top of the case you can see the threads of the old cable screwed all the way in. On the bottom pic, the cable does not appear to be threaded in all the way. Unless the metal threaded piece is shorter than the original.

It looks like it's not bottomed out but Drab said that it is. It could just be the difference between the old part vs. new part.

Looking at the lower pic I see that the cable is PULLING UP on the lever.
So far I haven't seen a pic of either of the adjusters.
SO no way to tell if they are IN or OUT. ................lm
