Stator Insulation

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Mon Nov 28, 2011 7:15 am

Does anybody know if there's a way to insulate the stator of a 1964 CA77E without taking it off and having the whole thing rewrapped? Can you use a silicone to cover any exposed copper wires? I've got some bare spots on mine...

I've got bare spots on mine too - I won't tell if you don't...

Seriously, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Anything you try to seal it with has to be heat, oil, vib, etc resistant and may come off later and do more bad than good. It doesn't effect the electrical properties at all. Silver's book says the insulation keeps the coils tight and reduces vibration and rubbing that could eventually lead to shorting but that hasn't happened to either of mine.

I use high temp silicone to cover the bare spots. It's all hidden once the outer cover goes on.

Davmoto, what kind and where can I find it? It's good to hear the exposed wiring doesn't create a short or anything, but I'd just sleep a little better at night knowing they were insulated...

I have too much experience with the learning curve of Yamaha electrics and am leery of Any exposed wiring creating a short...a sunny day...a breath of wind...the gravitational field of the Earth...I swear, with those bikes its like trying to balance a penny on a knife edge: it has to be Exactly On, or Forget It!...

I use clear Aquarium RTV if I put anything on the wires.
Those wires are not insulated from each other at the windings.
They are insulated from the case.
BTW this is a HONDA. ........lm
