Makes as much sense as anything else.......thanks for the reply!LOUD MOUSE wrote:Thanks for bringing that area of the data to me.
I missed that particular numbering.
SO.
Not that I can prove it but here goes.
Looking at the numbers for 1964 and seeing some with 100XXX and the others with 400XXX and knowing that the 1964 CL72 had the same numbering and as I find them there was only one difference with that CL72 numbering.
They had different front hubs and all the other parts were the same.
That said I do find that the TYPE 2 CL72 (1964) always has a 4 as the first number.
I've had One and Seen One other.
Tis been lots of discussion as to what part of the world some of these bikes were shipped to and their numbers.
Well I must assume this DREAM TYPE 1 and TYPE 2 are actually all TYPE 2 engines just shipped to certain areas of the world.
?????????????????????. ............lm

Ya have seen the only definitive engine/frame listing offered by HONDA.
My suspicion is ya have a 1965 frame and engine but nothing is available to tell what numbers 1966 or 67 started with.
Even the number on the harness is only the year that harness was made. .........lm

I hadn't seen any prior reference to Type 1 Dreams.
180 degree crank with single carb?
I've never heard of that before....but that certainly doesn't mean it didn't happen!
When I bought my dream there was a "Type I" on the points cover, which I attributed to someone putting on the wrong cover, as it is definitely not a 180 crank.
Were there actually any Type I dreams built?
cant figure out year of my frame and engine

My unusual serial number, not in the books
I have a pretty unusual serial number on my '63 CA77E, a number that is beyond all the published ones but not yet in the '64 series of numbers. Engine is CA77E 318807, frame 313556. According to all the books, the serial numbers for '63 stopped at 314731. To top it off, it has a 180 degree crank. Has anyone ever run into this before? A mechanic told me it was not too unusual to put the CB innards into a CA case since they will interchange. I've had it for a few years, finally getting it ready to go on the road and still have some timing issues and clutch to repair.
jerrybb, Are you sure your Frame number is CA77 and not CA78? Can you post a picture of your bike with a picture of the frame number? Though the Honda literature says the change from CA77 to CA78 was between 1963 and 1964 production years, there are a couple of other site members that have CA78's with 6-digit sequence numbers beginning with 3 - i.e. 1963 bikes.
I have run across two other 1963 CA78's and like yours, there is about 5,000 difference in the frame and engine numbers.
The thrust of this seems to be that with the change from CA77 to CA78 (mid '63 but without starting over with the 6-digit sequence numbers), Honda made the change from early to late handlebar controls (throttle, star cable adjusters, etc) tanks (w chrome covers and rubber leg pads), early to late head light bucket (unknown change), forks (adding the Honda badge) and luggage supports (where the rear shocks attach).
I am inclined to believe that you are correct that someone did put CB guts in the Dream motor.
I hope you will post some pics for us.

Type 1?
If you look closer at the chart that G-man posted, all the years listed have "Type" after the year. I don't think it has anything to do with Type 1 or Type 2 motor, but is just an oddity of translating Japanese into English in Honda literature. If you've ever tried to read a Honda shop manual, you know what I mean.
That said, I have no idea why there is a "1" and "2" "Type" for 1964. Obiously, the 6-digit- sequence number in the frames start with 1 and 4 respectively, but why two different sets of different sequence number for the same production year?
Anyone have a theory? I have a '64 with the "1" frame number if anyone has any ideas of what to look for.

OK, I've uploaded a bunch of photos of my oddball '63, including serial numbers. A few of the photos are "before" shots, but I really haven't done too much to it so far but it's obvious that the engine is not a 360 deg crank. Coils are two side-by-side's, maybe from a CB but I haven't seen one so I can't compare. Hope this link works, I've never used Flickr before.
Added: The head and carb fitting is standard Dream, one carb. I think the timing is one main problem since the left side isn't firing right. I can hold my hand on the muffler but the right is hot like normal. Starts and runs ok and the left is firing but must be out of time. I haven't adjusted valves yet, at this point I'm going to let my expert figure it out and install a new clutch. I haven't been able to find CA friction disks but he says to get the Superhawk ones, still available from Honda, and he has the steel disks. Ohio Cycle has none in stock. Any ideas? I can do it but I'd really rather not tear into the case-not too much fun for me anymore. Maybe later this week I'll drive it to a nearby road so I can get it hot and maybe free the clutch and avoid the issue. BTW I'm near SF, CA

I see a 360 rotor (sure must be fun to time the Duel points) and the 2 coils lead me to assume the bike has a 180 crank.
That said I haven't seen a pic of the head at the carbs.
Where ya located?. .......lm
