1965 Dream CA77. Speedo glass has some residue on the underside of it that I want to clean, or have the glass replaced. What is the process for removing the speedo head? Once removed, is it a tough process to disassemble enough to get the glass out?
Folks, you are about to be bombarded with newbie questions! I will search the past posts before I ask but rest assured, I will be covering some ground already covered many, many times before. Please bear with me. I'm a perfectionist and I want this beauty as close to that as I can get it.
Speedo head removal and disassembly...
Questions
The best thing for you to do is get a pot of coffee going and start using the "search" function on this site. It leaves a little to be desired, but if you work at it and try different combinations of words, you will find a wealth of info.
Note the choice of searching for threads or for posts in the lower left.
I know I have seen a number of posts specifically on speedometer restoration.
Good luck.

I did mine on my CA78, not too hard a job. Put it face down on a soft cloth and work your way around the chrome rim with a screwdriver, gently bending the metal out till you can lift the back out of the rim. I cleaned the glass, took out some gears and greased it. Also gently cleaned the face but that's pretty tricky to do without washing off the dial. I did just enough to make it look acceptable, then put it back together and bend the chrome rim back in place. It didn't work at all before, and now it seems to work fine. I wanted to clean the odometer dial but wasn't able to since that part doesn't come apart easily.
Forgot to add, you'll prob need to use some silicone or other sealer to hold the glass in and waterproof it. The original caulk is all dried out and will turn to powder.

How does the entire unit come out of the headlight housing? Just pull up real hard until it comes out or something breaks?jerrybb wrote:I did mine on my CA78, not too hard a job. I guess I forgot that part...Take out the screw below the headlight, remove the headlight. Inside you'll see the piece holding in the speedo with two small nuts. Take it out, unscrew the speedo cable, unplug the lights and you're ready to lift it out. You'll see how easy it is once you remove the headlight.
