50MPH stall, then transmission won't work

Post by Jlovvorn » Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:19 pm

Bike died at 50MPH out of nowhere at near WOT after running great for 25 mins.

Coasted to a stop. Thought the fuse blew or engine.

Electrics checked out and no sign of anything obviously wrong.

Then bike kicked over and ran, but the shifter was tight and it didn't want to go into gear.

Clutch lever felt totally normal.

Got it into gear and it limped along at slow speed for four block, then died again.

Would not start. Sat for 10 mins, kicked it over and rode home 1 mile, like nothing happened.

Electrics are good, engine seems good (with some issues to be sorted).

Does this sound like anything normal (maybe clutch going out?) or should I just push it into the river and let the nightmare be over.

Fuel cap vent stopped up or restricted?

Thanks. I don't think so. I have two holes and exorcized that demon a while ago (I think).

Here is my thought after some down time.

1. Stall at high speed unknown cause.
2. I was in 4th when I stalled. I thought I moved into neutral when I restarted, but was actually between 3rd and 4th, that explains the barely running (was trying to start in 3rd)
3. When it stalled again, because I was trying to stop and start in 3rd, I must have moved it down into 1st again.
4. When I rode home it ran as normal because, other than the stall at speed, nothing is wrong.

The question remains, why did a running bike just die at 50MPH?

It just died like someone flipped a switch. Was sure it was the fuse, but not.

Going to run some tests this weekend after I do the timing and points and valves.

Your description of the event sounds as though the troubles you are experiencing are transmission related. Possibly stuck in two gears? How does the bike shift? Just my perception.

After LM talked me though a rebuild of the clutch, it was shifting smoother and cleaner than any vintage Honda I have been on.

The transmission and clutch seemed excellent until that moment.

Every now and then it would hang between gears, but nothing clunky or noisy at all.

Would a transmission or clutch problem account for the stall in 4th?

Unlikely if you were riding along happily. You said WOT. Was it really flat out for a while?
A few thoughts:
Tank vent - check it again...
Restriction in the fuel supply allowing the bowls to empty out
A simple short or broken lead somewhere. Think about your riding position was it an unusal lie on the tank position that you don't normally ride in - I'm looking for what was different to a normal run for you.
Were you grabbing the bars a different way to usual and accidentally knocked the kill switch on the bars if you have one.

Thank you for this, it got me thinking.

I know I have a phantom short, as I was blowing fuses randomly for a while. Thought I beat it, but maybe it came back but did not blow the fuse.

I think your (and other's) thoughts about fuel are probably right.

It must have restricted for a second and died.

I was at 35MPH in 3rd, had only been up to speed for less than a mile, shifted into 4th and opened up pretty fast, it sped up to 50MPH although it felt a little boggy, and then died.

I have taken the bike up to 50-55 several times in the last week with zero trouble.

I have a brand new tank and lines and filters, and petcock, but it has been a couple weeks since I did those installs, so maybe I have a block somewhere.
