1965 CA77 front shocks squeal upon jounce...

Post by rzgkane » Sat Mar 31, 2012 12:54 pm

What is the usual cause of squealing shocks on these bikes? I can feel the vibration of the squeal with my finger on the front springs and would love to make it stop. I'm not, however, interested in a complete teardown right now (this bike has had enough down time lately) and I'm hoping there's some magic trick I can perform.

Grease 'em.
There's fittings everywhere, hit them all while you're at it.

Already did. It's not coming from the pivoting links. It's coming from up inside the fork covers and almost singing a tune through the shock's coils.

are you saying it does this all the time then, and not just when you hit a bump?

I'd be looking for something rubbing then if it's more of a harmonic thing that you're getting.
I'd also not be planning any serious miles until sorted.
check you're wheel bearings, open the forks up and give a look,
couldn't take more than an afternoon to lay your hands on it
and ride easy.

keep us posted.

It's nothing serious...

It's just old and squeaky.

I can feel the vibration (aren't all noises vibrations) through the spring of the front shocks assembly.

My springs squeak also. I only notice it when I'm stopped so it doesn't bother me enough to mess with it.
