Idle screw adjustment doesn't match

Post by akpasta » Thu May 03, 2012 10:37 am

Been noticing some shitty idle conditions so I pulled the air filters and tubes off yesterday to examine the slide movement. Noticed it was off a bit so I corrected it. My method was to take the idle screws out so the slides went all the way down, then lightly twist on the throttle to make sure they both started moving at the same time and moved back to the bottom at the same time. Then I opened them until the sides reached the top and ensured they were in the same spot. I got them synced.

Then I turned the idle screws in all the way on each side and started tuning them. This is where my question comes in. When the idle screws are screwed out the same distance (4 turns out from all the way in) for example, the idle is not synced at all. The left side is farting and popping while the right side is pretty fast. This is telling me not enough gas on the left side. So I turned the right side screw to 6 turns out and the left side to 3.5 turns out, and now it's purring beautifully. That doesn't seem right though. Is this normal? Could the bike I bought have been restored with different carb kits, perhaps different size/curved slides? The idle screws re the same length and I've made sure to adjust my air screws per the guide on this web site.

All this and I will refer ya to the FAQ and How I Tune and ya will see some of what ya have done doesn't matter.
Is that word necessary?. ..............lm

I read the FAQ, timing is in line, slides move at the exact same time, I believe I'm in line with these instructions. This issue has been the case since I bought the bike. I'm looking for a little more insight into what might be going on here.

To be honest I have never tried to match the turns out on the idle screws. What I would do is screw them out until they do not make contact with slide and then turn each one in until it just touches it. then start turning each one in the same amount until you reach the desired idle. That should get you close.

Thanks for the advice I'll try the opposite way.
