New Here, 1964 305 ?points issue ?

Post by Dumaine » Wed Sep 19, 2012 12:02 pm

Hello all.
I have a 64 Dream 305, it ras running only on the right side, I flipped plugs, still only right side, I crossed the wires, still only right side...
so, like a fool, I tried cleaning the points on the right side, now neither side fires....
are there points on both sides ? ugh...
-should I just buy nos points ?
thanks in advance-
D

I am in the North Atlanta area, and willing to sell it, clear title...

Don't give up on it yet! There's only one set of points. Was it actually running on one side or just sparking? How do you know it was just running on the right side (cold exhaust on the left, etc)?

There's lots of info on this site. I'd poke around for a while using the search function on the left yellow margin. There's years of Q and A there. You'll learn about the bike and it will help you ask good questions.

For starters, check/change the oil, put fresh gas in and flush the carb using the bowl drain or just take the bowl off. New D6HA plugs. Set the point gap to .014" then the timing with a static light. Make sure your battery is fully charged. Clean the points after you set them by dragging a small piece of cardboard through them. Don't leave any lint. I even like to spray a little brake cleaner in there to make sure all traces of grease are gone, then the cardboard.

If still no fire on one side or the other you will have to go a little deeper. Let us know...

I parked it just enough past the garage doors as it rained, just to let it run a while, when I went to wipe the light rain off the exaust and rear end, the left side was wet, right side dry, so yea-left side is cold.... but now it wont do anything.. ugh

-sorry, but I would be glad to sell it, I have to many projects, I didn't realise this was going to be one when I bought it...
