It runs....it doesn't run.....it runs....

Post by Kigsby » Mon Sep 24, 2012 8:26 am

I'm having a problem keeping my '62 dream CA77 running. I'll start it up - starts right away, runs strong. Try to start it an hour later and it won't start. It doesn't try to start, I just hear something spinning. I'll try it again the next day and it will start fine. I've checked all the wires to see if it was a loose connection somewhere and couldn't find anything. I've cleaned the points and checked the timing. Where do I start? Bad coil? Condenser? Points?

May be the starter is spinning but the starter clutch doesn't engage.
Have you looked behind the rotor to see if the chain is moving?. .........lm

Hi Ed!! Nope! I wasn't sure where to start. I will check to see if the chain is moving. But what would cause the chain to move sometimes, but not all the time?? Is there something else I should be looking at while I'm in there?

Ran into a problem with a stripped screw. Working on that first so I can take the cover off. I'll let you know about the chain as soon as I get in there! Thanks again for your help!

OK...finally got the stripped screw off and I tried to start the bike. The chain moved a little, stopped, then moved a little again. The bike wasn't trying to start, just heard spinning. Whatever was spinning was spinning faster than the chain! I then noticed smoke coming out from behind the right cover. Took the cover off and the clutch cable was melted against the starter switch. I don't know if that's the problem or just another problem. Doesn't look like there's much room to move the clutch cable out of the way. Is there supposed to be a cover on the starter switch? Here's a pic....

Don't know why my post above was blank?? Anyway...I checked the chain and when I try to start the engine, it moves a little, then stops, then moves a little more all the while I hear that spinning noise. Smoke came out of the right side cover - The clutch cable was touching the starter switch and it melted. It doesn't look like it melted all the way down to the cable but maybe that's why its not starting. I'm going to inspect and cover the cable and find another way to route it away from the switch and try and start it again. (I was too scared last night after seeing the smoke!)
