My kick start arm was off the bike. I removed the engine cover plate and positioned the kick start at 11 o'clock where it was positioned on it's own (of course had to rotate the arm so the coil spring cooperated until I reached the 11 o'clock position...)
Problem: when I went to start the bike the kick start arm began to spin/rotate into the muffler...
I took it off not to do damage.
What did I do wrong and how do I rectify?
Thanks! Vern
Kick Start - 1965 Dream CA78Hi Vern - Did you rotate the splined kick shaft clockwise to its stop prior to sliding the right side cover on? You also have to hold the kick start arm in a counter-clockwise (aft) direction at 11:00 against spring pressure that wants to drive it clockwise as you slide it on. If you did all that and it still wants to flop, you'll have to split the cases.
-48 Bottom line is you are recommending taking the cover off and following your direction here.. correct?
I'm not sure if I performed the second part: "hold kick arm in counter-clockwise direction at 11 o'clock against spring pressure"... I think after I positioned at 11 o'clock (step 1) - I just slide cover on. Was I suppose to feel the pressure of the arm wanting to spin clockwise before covering? Thanks, Vern Yes, and yes;
Take the side cover off (kick start arm, knuckle, spring, etc. comes with it). Rotate the splined kick-start shaft clockwise. It should ratchet-click until it hits the stop. Slide the right side cover on while holding the kick-start arm at 11:00 against spring pressure that wants to torque it clockwise. Once it engages the splined shaft, it will stay in place.
