Newb troubleshooting

Post by davesdreamin » Fri Nov 16, 2012 10:49 pm

I've been poking around the website a bit. Seems like a great place. I don't have too much experience working on motorcycles or engines but I just got a 305 dream. She's got a quirk or two. haha.

I was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose what could be going on/ i.e. if other people have had similiar situations?

I bought the bike and it started up when I got it w/ jumper cables. I bought a new battery because the old one was dead. It ran but only with the petcock on reserve. Maybe there is a clog in the petcock? Also, after putting on the new battery the next day it was dead so there is some kind of short I think. So I charged the battery and it started up again, just had to disconnect the battery when I was riding it. I was riding it to work and it died all of a sudden. It wouldn't start but it would turn over? and backfire. So i took out the carb and cleaned it with carb cleaner after removing the gaskets but I couldn't get the jet thats completely in side the top part of the carb out. Not sure what that parts called. Pictures would be helpful I'll have to put some up after i go back and clean the carb again. So I found when the I took the carb out that the air filter wasn't even hooked up, probably why it was so dirty. So after cleaning and replacing the carb it still wouldn't start, just backfire. Any ideas?

Thanks for reading.

Cheers,
Dave

yeah that's what i was wondering. I'll have to take a look at the owner's manual on how to do that. have you done that before? if so, any pointers beforehand that I should pay special attention to?

cheers,
Dave

There's lots of great information on the site. That's how I learned how to do it. Pm me if you have any questions but its pretty simple once you get in there.

Do you think it could still be the carb too?

The backfiring makes me think timing.
