Boiling brake hub

Post by zoom » Wed Nov 28, 2012 9:05 pm

So it's getting cold up here in da north country and forcing us to do our projects indoors now for a few months. I'm slowly progressing on a 64 Dream, working on the brake hubs now. The first I chemical stripped sanded bla bla bla. The other I thought nuts to dat. Took the thing apart and stuck it in water and brought to a boil and simmered for about 30" ( in the garage). The 50yo grease, brake dust and the yellow crappy clear coat just wiped off. Did a quick polish on the wheel and wow! That was easy!

Would be neat to see a picture of the finished product. That clear-coat is a drag...

boiling vs sanding

Post by zoom » Sat Dec 01, 2012 11:12 am

The one on the top left was boiled then buffed , the bottom right was chemically stripped, sanded, even had to use a brass wheel to get some tough spots. I got about 30" of work in the boiled one and prob a couple of hours and sore hands in the other. What ya think? I am not going for a museum piece but a nice looking vintage rider.
