The instances I found where reed systems are used on 4T bikes was to prevent air and fuel from being forced out of the intake valve before it closed. They were fitted this way from the factory, so they must serve a purpose. Something about reed petals being a "one way valve".

I'm not on expert on any of this stuff, just trying to learn. I'm use to 2stroke vespas, which are about the most simple motor there is.

Indeed....learn something new every day!

Reeds are used on some modern engines for air injection (smog) into exhaust ports, but I didn't know they were used in some 4 strokes in the intake

Google revealed this.....Honda XR500....supposedly increases low end torque...

Fascinating stuff. The earliest 4-stroke engines used a simple one-way valve for the inlet, just sucked open by the action of the piston going down.

It was replaced by the mechanically operated valve to increase engine operating speeds.

After 100 years or so, Honda seem to have combined the two to good effect. There really is nothing new, is there?.......

Fascinating indeed, Graham.

But if it ain't broke..... I love my PW26s. Rock solid; easy to tune; stable. One of the many factors that give the CB77 it's character.

ya. the only reason I'd look at alternate carbs is better availability of parts. I haven't emailed bill silver yet, but it seems like no one cares 145 main jets.

Reed is cool. It's very throttle efficient, but there's no room in the frame for a reed cage.
