Downshifting problemsDownshifting problemsCB77 is running fine through the gears up, but coming down it is missing 2nd every now and then, and ending up in a false neutral.
Then a pretty big clunk at stop to get down to first. Not hard to get it there. Just a big clunk. Down from 4th to 3rd is always fine. But 3rd to 2nd is really hit and miss. I find shifting it firmly down vs soft has no effect. But the slower I am going before the downshift to 2nd, the less often this miss occurs. Anyone have ideas? And if you tell me to split the cases after I just finished a top end rebuild and finally have the bike running solid, I am gong to freak out....
Re: Downshifting problemsTake a good look at the angle of the part which is attached to the shift shaft.
It must be at 11:00 or the rod and attachment will bind and not allow the shaft to rotate enough to change gears. ........lm
Thanks. I think I am at 11, just like you told me, but I will double check that.
This feels more internal. After it misses 2nd and I am coasting along, if I kick it down again, it will go easily into first, but with a nasty clunk. I have already locked up the rear wheel once at about 25mph doing this by accident, and it wasn't fun. Before freaking out, remove the clutch cover and make sure nothing has come loose or is bent with the shifting mechanism. If all looks good then it's into the tranny. The good news is you don't have to remove the top end. Pull the motor, flip it over, remove all clutch and alternator side parts, and split it open. Then you can start looking for the cause of your shifting issues
