Alternative coil

Post by cadman » Tue Jan 22, 2013 5:43 pm

The Dream I bought had lost its original coil and it was running with a temporary automotive coil. (Lots of tape and wire). Since I deal with a lot of early Honda fours I rounded up a coil from one. After a little testing I determined it would work. The pictures below give you an idea of what I did.

Made a simple L bracket – drilled one hole just forward of the air cleaner cutout. Mounted the coil in this area. Added two lengths of wire to run back to the original coil hook-up (green wire to points – black wire +12VDC). Note the four cylinder coil has a black and blue wire. The blue wire connects the green on the Dream. Also note that the coil must be mounted with a GOOD ground. There are mounting holes on each end of the coil. At least one of them must have a solid ground.

At this point I do not have a stock air cleaner so I don’t know if the coil placement will be a problem. I don’t think it will.

Cadman,

If you have the original mounting bracket and want to have the coil in the original location. I bought me one of these coils when my original gave it up. Fits right into the bracket with no modifications. I went to my local NAPA Auto parts store and bought me some 7mm solid core wire and some NGK 5ohm plug caps. Haven't experienced any problems to date. I believe the coil is marked which terminal is +, but as you look at the mounted coil, the positive terminal is on the top and the bottom terminal goes to the points.

I did not have the original bracket - Plus I am frugal so I used the plug wires that cam e with the coil.
