CL77 project, Starting from boxes.Since you seem to be a fussy kinda guy (me too, to a degree) that steering damper can be polished with a little Flitz or similar.
I believe the piping on the CL77 seat was black, but I could be wrong. If it was silver, then I also believe it was originally gold and turned to silver with age, kinda like the logos on the back of seats. regards, Rob Rob,
I just bought my first tube of Flitz a few weeks ago based on what I have read on the forum and have been trying it out on everything including the damper last night. It does spruce things up nicely. The seat does get the silver piping since it is a late model bike with chrome fenders. The piping turns kind of gold when it gets old. I wish it was supposed to be black piping because I would be all set. V/R Rich
Yes, that is silver tinsel welt you need. The clear vinyl would turn to amber as it aged and hardened. People saw this and mistakenly thought the Honda seats had "gold" welt. This welt was used on some of the other smaller displacement CLs and I think the last Candy S90s too. If you need some length for your seat I have some new silver tinsel welt available.
HT It’s been a while since I last updated this thread. Last fall I got the bike mostly complete and was able to put 100 or so miles on it. Here is a few pictures of what it looks like. I am still working on a seat but in the meantime what I have looks pretty good.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I had a problem with the clutch so back in the basement it went. I tore the clutch out an inspected everything and couldn’t find a thing wrong. I spent a few hours reading everything on the site about clutches and decided all I need to do was scuffed up the steel plates. Also while at it I found what I think were the original carbs for the bike so I cleaned them in an ultrasonic cleaner (that a friend loaned me) and installed them. So that’s where I am at now. The bike is on the lift waiting for warm weather. CL77
CT90 RE5 49 Harley RT3 Yamaha
Excellent work. You are like me it looks like. I bought mine, however, but it was 3 years ago now and I am just getting everything ready to be put back together. In between I restored a little Harley X90, Suzuki 250, and been piddling around with a 74 Yamaha Enduro. Not sure why I am taking so long on mine but maybe the cost of parts, chrome, etc had something to do with it. I am trying NOT to be bit by the perfection bug but I am failing as well---once one part looks so good and I try and put on something that maybe isn't as nice, well guess what? I have to find a part that looks perfect.
Anyway, nice job---hopefully my 66 CL77 looks every bit as good as yours.
