ok, when you are looking at this pic---on the right hand side there is that long bolt that goes thru the cam and comes out and gets a nut on it. Just what is the purpose of that bolt? The only reason I ask is because when I try and tighten it, it spins on the head end of it---

The head of that bolt is tapered and it is located at the end of the camshaft. Tightening the nut wedges the splines on the cam out a few thousandths for a tight fit in the camshaft sprocket.

ok, that makes sense but I can't get that bolt to stop turning---I can feel it wedged in the spot but it still turns and I can't get the nut tightened. Any ideas?

You could remove the cam from the other side(loosen the big nut at the sprocket) and reach in there with a long drift and tap on the bolt to seat it in the taper.

What about putting a pair of vise grips on the nut and prying out on it to see if you can get the taper to wedge in the other end. It doesn't seem like it will take much. Just a thought.

ok, I finally got it---I pulled out on it with a vise like you suggested and it worked.
