are 305 transmissions all the same gearsare 305 transmissions all the same gearsbased on my other thread, I have something wrong with 2nd gear on my CB77. can I use the tranny from a cl77?? are the gears the same?
Hi,
The C77 and the CB77 share some gears, but some are different. The C77 and CA77 also share 75 % of the gears, 25 % is different. I don't know about the CL and the bikes are mentioned by me, since I'm not a specialist on the CL's, Jensen assembly of Japanese motorcycles requires great peace of mind (Pirsig)
The entire transmission will swap out. To check that individual gears can be swapped, just compare the two gears - number of teeth etc
Dreams and CBs have different ratios but I think that the CL has the same gears as the CB. A quick look at the CL parts list indicates that most of the gears are model code 268 (CB72/77) so you should be OK. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

One thing to keep in mind is the clutch splines. Shallow vs deep. You may or may not be able to use your current clutch depending on the donor trans. I ordered an CL77 transmission from ebay (canada) that has the shift forks and drum included and all the gears looked good. If I only want to change 2nd gear, do the gears just slide off or do I have to press anything off first. Someone on this forum said I could flip the engine over and only disassemble the bottom end which I hope is true.
You do have a parts book. ................lm
I have this manual, which is not great on the diagrams

I was told to get the Bill Silver book which I am guessing is "Motor Tuning, Repair and Maintenance Guide, 1961 - 1967" update: ordered > Motor Tuning, Repair and Maintenance Guide, 1961 - 1967
