POR-15 Kit Application
Mason, I have used the POR-15 kit on 3 tanks at this point. 2 cb77 tanks and one cb350. The kit is great but it is time consuming. Depending on how bad the insides are, plan on a few days to do the job. I found it nearly impossible to seal the cap on the cb77 tanks due to those little cutout tabs for turn and lock caps. I spent $30 buying little grommets and plugs and whatnot and still I ended up re painting the tank. Cork plugs work great for sealing the petcock hole and it don't react to the chemicals. A 5 gallon bucket is great for dumping the tank out. Flush the tank with a muriatic acid and hot water mix (Available at lowes/homedepot) first to get a lot of the gunk out. Muriatic acid is used for cleaning exterior bricks and they sell an eco friendly version too. Just be sure to neutralize it with baking soda before disposing. A few treatments will help the marine clean do its job. Also have a good heat gun to dry the tank out before adding the por-15. Get the tank really hot! All the inside seams where water hides need to be bone dry. Once you think it's dry, dry it again.
After you coat and drain out all the leftover por-15, I let the tank sit so any remaining runs to the upper top end of the tank and away from the petcock and crossover holes.
