CB77 petrol tap

Post by SMBH » Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:42 am

My new Honda 1964 CB77 I have only had some 4 weeks is turning from a Dream into a nightmare, so much I have found damaged or just not working and if you had seen it you would have thought man that looks good it had won a award at the Staffored Classic bike show in 2007 (I have the rosette) here in the UK and has covered some 1,500 miles from full restoration. I have only don a few miles on it and when I tgot home there was oil all over the right hand side of back end over the tyre, the rear brake is appaling I have to stand heavey on it and then it's not working the front is only good if one pulls the lever very hard, there was popping in the left hand muffler on tick over when it was reved up.

I have read all about the oil from the right side here on this great forum and have ordered some oil seals, I will check out the carb settings for the poping dont think it's the exhaust as I fitted all new seals.

I will not go into further detail not enough space here.

My latest find is the petrol tap or petcock the threads have gon so I heed a new one and the only one I could find was on Ebay and looks a good price here in the UK.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131050701728? ... 1497.l2649

it has no cross over tube as it is the later one so I intend to block off the one side of the tank will the fuel find it's way to the other side?

And so back to my nightmare. I will not give up but my pension money may.

Hi its Richard here from Cambridgeshire, i supplied Alan with some spare parts for the bike and met him at the Stafford show when he showed it! It looked very nice then, i have just finished a restoration project on a CB72. Its quite slow compared to my 1200 mirage laverda

That looks like it could do the trick. You won't have problems with fuel getting from one side to the other. Later bikes managed without.

You are discovering that making a bike shiny and making it work well are two different things. I like to restore wrecks so that I have no misconceptions about what I have started with.

Take care

Thanks guys, you know G Man I have been around a long time on bikes like had a CB72 and a CB77 back in 1965 and a lot of bikes have passed through my hands in some 50 years of motorcycling and not once have I had to take one to a dealer to repair. I have just sold a T140 I had for some 20 years as it was getting a little bit to much to handle now it was in perfect condition SU carb/alloy barrels/belt primery drive and so much more my reason was im to old now for it so it was time to go back to that lovely CB77 I had back in my younger days.

Back in 1966 ish my CB77 I won the best Honda award on the Isle of Man in TT week at the Honda owners club day at Laxey.

I did purchase this CB77 thinking well you know I know bikes and it did look good but how wrong I was yes it do's need some TLC but some of the things I have found have surprised me, and I paid top wack (well for me it was) for this CB77 and it has cost me a lot of money to date and not just £88.00 for a ignition switch from CMS there has been lots of other items.

I will be as happy as a pig in sh-- come summer if I get it right.

Well you know what they say there's no fool like a old fool.
(hope the wife do's not read this forum)

I have been chasing a dream. I rode my brother's. CB72 when I was 14 and have never forgotten it. He sold it shortly afterward and I always wanted one. I picked up a ghastly CB77 wreck almost 4 years ago and it will be back together next year.

Along the way I have picked up enough parts and failed projects to build another 4! I have learned a lot from this forum and just enjoy the therapy of working on these lovely bikes. My bikes will all be built to ride and I will not part with any of them until I have proved to myself that they are right.

I travel a lot but if you need any help, feel free to contact me.

Thanks G-Man that's very kind of you.

I had a smile when I see the picture you put up of the rusty Honda well at least you have a good front mudgaurd. You are a better man than me I don't think I would take on a bike like that well perhaps maybe a Triumph but then you can get parts for them.

I will now go and wash my mouth out after saying Tri--ph on this forum, still I do have one in the garage I have had for 40 years, well thats another long story.

Thanks again for your kind offer.

HaHa!

I bet there are plenty of Triumph owners here. I had a 1967 T100T in 1976 and now have a 955i Daytona which is probably too fast for me. Modern Bonnie's are just too heavy. I'd like a 1970 TR6 but they just cost too much.

Take care
