Hi all,

I've been lurking around here for quite a while and have posted a couple of times, but have never really introduced myself and my bike properly (although some of you may have seen my posts on the honda twins forum). I did post once a few years back when I 'bought' a different CB77, but on going to pick the bike up it was a bit more of a project than the description had led me to believe (putting it kindly) so I walked away.

So around two years later I finally have my CB77! Being in UK all I could find were tatty, overpriced ones, so I decided to take the plunge and ship one over from the USA. It was a very long and nervous wait for it to arrive but definitely worth it. There is a bit of work to do, but I'm enjoying learning about the bike as I go. It starts and runs really well, the gearbox seems great too, and I managed to get a couple of rides in before getting stuck in to working on the bike over the winter.

This is the bike at the moment! Tank and headlight bowl have gone off for painting:

There's a long-ish list of small things to do, but my main projects at the moment are the starter motor and alternator. The starter motor that was on the bike had a big short in the windings somewhere, and I've now managed to get my hands on a working one which is in need of checking over and painting. The rotor has lost its magnetism, and the stator has a burnt out coil, so the charging system is less than happy at the moment.

I'm really surprised and pleased at how original the bike is so I will be replacing as few parts as possible, and doing my best to work with what I have. One thing I do need is a set of silencers...I was promised a set of good condition originals with the bike but they are scratched, dented and scraped just about everywhere! It has a great set of reverse cone megaphones on it at the moment which sound incredible but I really want to get it back to looking original. I've heard from David Silver that he may have a supplier for reproductions soon so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions soon, and there's lots of great info on this forum!

Cheers,

Steph.

Hi Steph

Nice looking find! There is a guy in Australia who make Stainless steel replica mufflers. Outwardly they are excellent reproductions but they have fixed, rather than removable baffles. I bought some for a Dream and they look excellent.

Enjoy you project.

Was it you who bought the blue CB77 in the Midlands?

Hi Graham,

Yes it was me who bought that blue CB77 - and I remember you were slightly suspicious of it at the time, rightly so! It would have been a huge project, so I walked away and decided to wait for a couple of years until I was better placed financially. Besides which I also have a CB550F2 which kept me busy in the meantime! (I seem to remember you sent me a picture of a beautiful yelow 400/4 you had restored?)

I had seen the Australian mufflers but didn't realise they were stainless. They were a little more money than I was hoping to pay, but may well be worth it for stainless. I'll have another look and check the bank balance...!

Cheers,

Steph.
